On the Monday following Sunday “in Albis” (the first Sunday after Easter) in Tremestieri Etneo (CT), according to tradition, the feast is celebrated in honor of the Madonna della Pace, Patroness of the town. The devotion of the inhabitants of Treviso towards the Madonna has very ancient origins. In the past there were many altars dedicated to the Madonna along the roads of the town and in the country, like the altogether unique one, for its topographical meaning, now unfortunately long since disappeared, placed on the border with Mascalucia and Pedara, containing three images: in the middle the Madonna della Pace and on the sides S. Vito and S. Antonio Abate, which indicated, in the iconographic location of the respective protectors, the belonging of the territories to the three neighboring Municipalities.
To confirm the patronage of the town, the effigy of the Madonna della Pace has for many centuries been the emblem of the Municipality. Every year, in honor of the Madonna della Pace, the solemn mass is celebrated, the firecrackers are blown up, there are sellers of “calia” and crispelle and the band play happily in the streets and city squares to the delight of the great and the little ones. A large crowd of villagers, new residents, vacationers and strangers follows the statue of the Madonna carried triumphantly on the artistic fercolo for the country and all seem to grasp, in the sweet and maternal expression of the sacred simulacrum, the sign of a yearning for peace and comfort that the simple and generous spirit of the past generations wanted to summarize in the title of “Queen of Peace” given to the Madonna elected protector of Tremestieri.
