25th and 26 th of July 2016 – Acireale (CT)
Baroque festival in honor of Santa Venera Virgin and Martyr, principal patron of the City of Acireale (Catania) and the Diocese.
The celebrations of Santa Venera begin on the first Sunday of July with the release through the streets of the city, the four candelore characteristics. These are large and colorful wooden carved candles, carried on shoulders by able men representing the guilds of Arts and Crafts (shoemakers, bakers, fishmongers, masons and craftsmen). Usually a lively orchestra accompanies the typical dance “annacata” (shake, in Sicilian dialect) of the Candlemas to the rhythm of a festive march music.
The best moment of the celebration is the Concert of Songs for Santa Venera Patroness on July 24, the only concert of its kind that provides for the execution of the most beautiful pages of ancient musical Chapel of the Town Hall, written in honor of Santa Venera by the most accredited Master of the Chapel of the XVIII – XX performed by the Choir of the Royal Venerable Chapel of Santa Venera.
On July 26 the celebrations goes on with Solemn Pontifical Mass in the morning and the procession and Cantata evening hymn to the Patron Saint performed by the Choir of the Royal Venerable Chapel of Santa Venera along with some Choir of the Diocese Acireale.
